When asked how the department was making sure migrants are processed quickly and within legal time limits on arrival in the UK, Mr Ridley told the committee the Home Office was “making sure we’ve got a buffer that is close to 5,000 beds … so we’re carrying a large number of empty beds in order to let us move people out (of Manston)”. Home Office second permanent secretary Simon Ridley revealed the figure when questioned by MPs on Monday.
